About Our Freezer Repair Service
A standalone freezer is the appliance nobody checks until something goes wrong. It sits in the garage, the laundry room, or a back hallway, holding bulk meat, batch-cooked meals, and everything that didn't fit in the kitchen. When it fails, the first sign is often a puddle on the floor or a package that gives when you press it. A full freezer keeps food frozen for about 48 hours with the door closed, a half-full one for about 24, so freezer calls go to the front of our schedule.
This page covers dedicated freezers: frost-free and manual-defrost uprights, chest freezers, garage freezers, compact units, and built-in column and drawer freezers. If the problem is the freezer compartment of your refrigerator or its ice maker, see our refrigerator repair page. Walk-in, reach-in, and display freezers in restaurants and stores are handled by our commercial freezer repair service.
Our technicians are licensed by California BHGS (#49152) and EPA Section 608 certified for sealed-system work. We repair Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Haier, Hisense, Midea, and Danby freezers, as well as built-in column freezers from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Liebherr, Fisher & Paykel, and Miele, using OEM parts on every repair.
Freezer calls come in from Glendale and nearby Burbank, Pasadena, and La Crescenta-Montrose. See every city we serve on our locations page.
Common Freezer Problems
We Fix
Dedicated freezers fail differently from the freezer section of a refrigerator. Many chest freezers run their condenser tubing inside the cabinet walls, many uprights are manual-defrost, and a freezer in a garage deals with heat, dust, and shared circuits that kitchen appliances never see. Below are the failures we diagnose most often in Glendale homes.
1. Freezer Running but Not Freezing
You hear the unit running, yet the contents are soft or the thermometer reads well above 0°F. We test the compressor start relay and overload, compressor windings, condenser fan and coils on upright models, the thermostat or control board, and the sealed system for a refrigerant leak. Clicking every few minutes with no cooling usually means the compressor is trying to start and failing.
2. Garage Freezer Problems
Glendale garages get far hotter than the house in summer, and a freezer that is not rated for garage use can run nonstop and still lose temperature. Lint from a nearby dryer and garage dust clog the condenser, and a shared or worn GFCI outlet can cut power overnight without anyone noticing. We check the unit, its clearance, and its circuit, then tell you what the freezer needs and what the location needs.
3. Frost and Ice Buildup
On frost-free uprights, heavy frost on the back panel points to a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost control. On manual-defrost uprights and chest freezers some frost is normal, but fast buildup usually means a leaking gasket, a sagging lid hinge, or a unit that is not level. We tell you whether you have a failed part or a freezer that is simply overdue for a manual defrost.
4. Lid, Door, and Seal Failures
Torn or flattened chest lid gaskets, counterbalance hinges that no longer hold the lid open, cracked hinge mounts, and upright doors that drop out of alignment all let warm air in. We replace gaskets and hinges with OEM parts and adjust the door or lid so it closes on its own and seals all the way around.
5. Water on the Floor or Sweating Cabinet
A chest freezer with a cracked or open drain plug, or an upright with a clogged defrost drain or cracked drain pan, will leave water under the unit. Condensation on the outside of the cabinet usually means a poor door seal or a hot-wall condenser working harder than it should. We find the source before replacing anything.
6. Alarms, Noises, and Control Faults
A high-temperature alarm that will not clear, a display that flashes after a power outage, a power light that is on while the freezer stays silent, or a loud fan or rattling compressor. We test the temperature sensors, electronic control, fans, and compressor mounts to find the part behind the symptom.
7. Built-In Column and Drawer Freezers
Column freezers from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Liebherr, Fisher & Paykel, and Miele, and undercounter freezer drawers, sit behind custom panels and inside tight cabinet openings. We remove and reinstall them without damage to the cabinetry. For the full scope of our premium work, see our High-End Appliance Repair page.
